Events:
The Limassol Carnival (March)
The festival lasts for ten days and is a very old tradition, going back to pagan rituals. With the passage of time it has acquired a different, purely entertaining character, with a large, popular following. The festival starts with the entrance parade of the King Carnival, followed by a fancy-dress competition for children in the local stadium. During the Carnival parade in the main streets, large crowds from all over the island gather to watch the floats and fancy-dress balls and parties take place at many hotels every night.
The Anthestiria - Flower Festival (May)
This festival takes place in May at Lanition Stadium, with flower parades and exhibitions of plants and flowers.
The Kataklysmos - Festival of the Flood (June)
Kataklysmos is a festival which takes place at the seafront of Limassol, on the Sunday of the Pentecost and the Monday of the Holy Spirit. Popular songs known as "chatista" are sung by different groups and a variety of dance and song competitions take place.
Shakespearean nights (June)
The Shakespeare festival is a charity event annually organized by the Society for Chest Diseases at the ancient open air theatre of Curium. The performances attract large audiences from Cyprus and abroad.
The Wine Festival (September)
The Wine Festival of Cyprus takes place in the first week of September in the Municipal Garden of Limassol, every evening between 8.00 hrs - 23.00 hrs. During the festival there is live music and dance displays and you can taste some of the best Cyprus wines, which are offered free of charge.
Ancient Greek Drama Festival (July - August)
This cultural event is organised by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation and the Cyprus Theatre Organisation. Performances of ancient dramas and comedies are presented in Greek and are held in the ancient Theatre of Curium, 19 km west of Limassol.
Nightlife:
Not immediately as obviously buzzing as Ayia Napa in high season, Limassol has a more sophisticated selection of clubs, pubs and live music bars, both in the Amathus and Yermasoyia areas as well as around the Castle near the old port.
Eating out:
Limassol has many traditional tavernas and restaurants offering international cuisine. All the usual fast-food chains, KFC, Pizza Hut, Burger King etc are here and there are a number of very good fish restaurants. The 'gastrodome' set in the lanitis carob mill offering several different restuarants in one would not be out of place in London or Paris for instance.
We personally recommend:
Taverna Kato Chorio
Viotias & Trapezountas St. Germasoyia
Tel : 25316656
Kato Chorio has been established for over 8 years in the heart of Limassol and is a traditional Cypriot Taverna which provides not only great food, but great entertainment to go with it. The meze is very rich with over 20 dishes of traditional Cypriot food. You are assured of a great night out, eating, drinking and dancing the night away till the early hours of the morning. The dancers will treat you to a series of traditional moves that will leave you mesmerised, you can even join in and try them out. The Taverna is open every night except Tuesdays, with live music every night and a live Cypriot dance show on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Piatakia
7 Nikodimou Mylona St.
Tel : 25745017
Piatakia Restaurant, which translated means Little Plates, is a unique experience. The only thing little is the plates because you will need a big appetite when you visit this delightful restaurant. The meze theme comes of age as you look through the extensive menu and choose your own personal meze. But this is no ordinary meze. It is something totally different as your host Roddy will explain the specials of the evening. There is a wide selection of wines both imported and local and after your meal be sure to try the desert, so leave a little room or you will miss out.
Other things to do and see in Limassol:
Boat cruises, go-karting, horse-riding, jeep safaris, jet skis, parascending, banana boats and ringos, speed boat hire, water skiing, waterparks.
